Read: Reflections of Native Voices Conference Report 2024 hosted by Safe Harbors NYC and the Brown Arts Initiative

If you’re a theatre artist wanting to understand more about the landscape and unique needs of Native theatre artists, we highly suggest starting with the Reflections of Native Voices Conference Report 2024. The summary is below:

“SUMMARY: In the summer of 2023 at Brown University, Safe Harbors NYC and The Brown Arts Initiative (BAI) held the Reflections of Native Voices conference. We invited Native Theater organizations and Native community members from the Tri-state area of New York City, New England to discuss the current state of Native Theater in New York City. There were over 50 Native theater community members who participated in this conversation throughout the conference. Safe Harbors NYC gathered qualitative feedback and compiled recurring themes from the conference conversations, including; land acknowledgments, organizational support, individual empowerment, intersectionality, cultural competency. Sustainable change is a collaborative effort in which all stakeholders should be involved. To push that change forward we have developed recommendations and calls to action for organizational, governmental, and foundation stakeholders. We hope to further the conversation, taking steps forward to break down barriers, foster meaningful dialogue, and ensure that Indigenous voices are heard and honored in the East Coast theater world.”
